Paul Carr’s The Upgrade

6/03/2012

I still remember the first time I read a Paul Carr article on Techcrunch. Carr was just hired by Arrington and wrote a column on the weekends called NSFW, which were great to read but were soooo long (for a blog). Then Paul fell off my radar till the Techcrunch fallout where I started to follow him on twitter, then the stealth launch of NSFW, and now on PandoDaily. Paul’s no BS writing style makes his work fun to read and his tweets fun (below, after the review).

Carr’s second book, The Upgrade: A Cautionary Tale of a Life Without Reservations, chronicles his life as a nomad, traveling around the US and Europe, living in hotels for less than the cost of his flat in London. Freelance writing was paying the bills and stories about his drunken adventures attracted readers. I broke the book down into quarters.

A few thoughts on the Steve Jobs biography

16/02/2012

So I just finished the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. Overall this is one of the best book I have ever read. How do I know that? Well, I never have been able to stick with a book that is almost 600 pages before. I usually get bored and move on when the story slows down (read: lame). This isn’t going to be a general review of the book as there are hundreds of those. Many of the reviews you can read are pretty accurate. All of the headline worth Jobs quotes from the book have been plastered on blogs, so if you have read the reviews when the book first came out (as I did) there really wont be any huge, crazy surprises. But I was overall impressed with the story and there were a few nuggets.

Entrepreneur in Davos – The World Economic Forum

1/02/2012

Last week was the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Matthew Prince, the CEO and co-founder of CloudFlare, found himself in the unfamiliar environment of major corporate and political figures at one of the most selective conferences in the world.

Prince documented his journal in Davos in a five article series for new SV blog PandoDaily. Matthew wrote about the long chance of being invited, the interesting dynamic of who wants to go to which party and rubbing shoulders with the world elite (even when you lost your bag and wear the same cloths for days). Overall a great look at the World Economic Forum from the perspective of an entrepreneur.

Here are the five articles Mr. Price wrote for PandoDaily, Tech Dispatches From Davos:

USVI rebrand wins best identity

18/11/2011

Local designer and close friend Gabe Shultz won the Best Identity at the CSCA’s Creative Best awards show for rebranding the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) soccer team. The rebranding was a side project that Gabe did for fun.

A recent conversation with Gabe was around the strength of the NY Cosmos soccer brand. A team that had a ton of success in the NASL in the 70′s. The team has been relaunched with the backing of Umbro and is selling a ton of merchandise, but is not part of a professional soccer league (rumors that they are trying to join the MLS are on and off). The brands success is based on the individuals involved (Pele, Eric Cantona, and Cobi Jones) and its heritage.
